Coaches Profile - Coach Martin

At Everyday Athlete Gym, we pride ourselves on our coaching. If “People Make Glasgow” our “Coaches make EDA”.

Each and every one of them is highly experienced and highly qualified, and we thought it was time you get to know them better. In this series “Get to Know the EDA Coaching Team”, we are going to be sitting down to explore their motivations, and their drive, what brought them to the fitness industry, and what keeps them here.

We hope you enjoy getting to know our team.

How did you get started?

My parents put me in a karate class as a kid and its where I started to develop my love for martial arts, and fitness in general. At around fourteen, Coach Tommy introduced me to Muay Thai, and everything changed. I upped my training to two, three, four, then five days. I just always wanted to get better, and the fact I was training with pals and basically my brother was really just a bonus.

I began to add weightlifting and conditioning into my training to help support my Muay Thai, then by the age of 18 I had my first fight, and the rest was history.

I knew I loved fitness and was lucky to have grown up surrounded by people in the industry who were incredibly driven, hard-working, and successful. Coach Tommy gave me my first coaching role at Glasgow Uni, and I have been there ever since. I went to college to study Sports Coaching and Fitness and began to help Coach Valbo, Paddy and Tommy at Fight Camp before going full-time at the opening of EDA in 2016.

What Motivates You?

I get to work and train with my best pals, and it really doesn’t get better than that.

Whilst we are all pretty busy, coaching different classes, PT’ing our clients, and the day-to-day running of the gym, we always make time to train together.

Training with the team and having some “friendly” competition against the other coaches is the highlight of my day. Not only am I getting the chance to shake off any stress and get those training endorphins, but it’s also just a laugh.

Beating Coach Valbo or Tommy just makes your day better and losing makes me want to push harder the next day.

What Keeps You in the Fitness Industry?

Without a doubt, it’s my clients and the members.

Sure, all jobs can have tough days, but I have some incredibly driven clients, and seeing them come in and give it their all, even on hard days is really inspiring.

I’ve had the opportunity to train some of our members and my clients for over six years and getting to celebrate their highs and support them through their lows has been really awesome.

What are you doing this for?

Training keeps me sane.

It reduces my stress levels, boosts my mood, and plays a really vital role in my overall mental health.

The social aspect is brilliant too.

I know I’m super lucky to have found a career that I love, that allows me to support my family whilst getting to work alongside my best friends, not many people get to say that when they come home at the end of the day.

What’s your favourite workout?

Anything I can beat the guys at! Just kidding… Kind of!

I love most workouts with burpees and pull-ups, snatches, or deads. My current faveourite workout is Diane, a super short and sweet, for time workout.

Coach Martins's Favourite Workout:

Diane
21, 15, 9
Deadlifts
Handstand push-ups

You’re going to need a barbell or heavy dumbbells for deadlifts and something to rest your head on for handstand push-ups (we use Ab Mats at EDA). You will perform 21 deadlifts, once completed you will perform 21 handstand push-ups, then 15 reps of each, and then 9 reps of each. Then you're finished! Score is the time taken to complete.

We hope you’ve enjoyed getting to know Coach Martin a bit better! Keep a look out on social for our next coaches’ profile in December.

As we said, our coaches make Everyday Athlete Gym one of the best places to train in Glasgow. Our coffee machine, free parking, convenient location just off the M8, and our toasty warm, perfect water pressure showers are some other great reasons too.
