Welcome to the thrilling world of Hyrox, a global fitness phenomenon that's taking Glasgow by storm, and Everyday Athlete Gym (EDA GYM) is at its forefront. Everyday Athlete Gym has been host to the HYROX PFT Tour in 2023 and has had its Coaches and members take place in multiple divisions of the Event. Having been part of this fitness revolution, first hand we know exactly what it takes to take part and be efficient in the Hyrox Event. In this comprehensive guide, we'll dive into what Hyrox is, how Everyday Athlete Gym is paving the way for Hyrox training in Glasgow, and why this might just be the fitness challenge you've been looking for.

What is Hyrox?

Hyrox, originating from Germany, is a unique blend of strength, endurance, and functional training, rapidly gaining popularity worldwide. Hyrox is an innovative fitness competition that blends endurance, strength, and functional movement. It's uniquely designed to challenge a wide range of athletes, from those with a background in endurance sports to functional fitness enthusiasts.

The competition is structured with a series of eight different exercises, starting with the run and each exercise is also followed by a 1km run. This format results in a total of 8km of running interspersed between these challenging workouts. Here’s a detailed look at each segment of the Hyrox event:

  • Starting 1km Run: The event commences with the first 1km run, pushing competitors heart rates up prior to the first exercise.

  • 1km SkiErg: The events first workout is the the SkiErg, a machine that simulates the motion of cross-country skiing. This exercise tests your upper body endurance and strength, primarily targeting your arms, back, and core.

  • 1km Run: Following the SkiErg, competitors embark on the second 1km run, transitioning from upper body to full-body endurance.

  • Sled Push: Next, athletes face the sled push. This exercise demands lower body power, pushing a weighted sled across a set distance, engaging the legs, glutes, and core.

  • 1km Run: The third 1km run serves to keep the heart rate up and maintain endurance levels.

  • Sled Pull: This complements the sled push, focusing on back, arms, and core strength as athletes pull a weighted sled towards themselves.

  • 1km Run: A fourth 1km run follows, helping competitors to reset and prepare for the next challenge.

  • Burpee Broad Jump: This full-body movement combines a burpee with a broad jump, testing cardio endurance and agility.

  • 1km Run: The fifth 1km run acts as a break from strength exercises and keeps the endurance test going.

  • 1km Rowing: A full-body workout, rowing demands endurance and strength, focusing on legs, back, and arms.

  • 1km Run: After rowing, the Sixth run segment helps transition to the next functional exercise.

  • Farmer's Carry: Holding heavy weights like kettlebells, this exercise tests grip strength, core stability, and overall endurance as athletes carry the weights over a distance.

  • 1km Run: The Seventh 1km run continues to challenge the athletes' stamina.

  • Sandbag Lunges: This involves performing lunges while holding a weighted sandbag, testing leg strength, endurance, balance, and stability.

  • Final 1km Run: The eighth run  leads into the final challenge of the event.

  • 100 Wall Balls: A high-intensity exercise, wall balls involve throwing a weighted ball against a wall and catching it in a squat position, engaging multiple muscle groups.

Each part of Hyrox is thoughtfully crafted to test different aspects of fitness: endurance, strength, agility, and mental toughness. It's a comprehensive challenge that requires well-rounded physical conditioning.

An impressive 98% of participants successfully complete their HYROX event. HYROX is an inclusive competition, welcoming everyone without any time limits or entry qualifications.

This event encourages participants to race at their own speed, surrounded by the encouragement of friends, family, and fellow racers.

Moreover, HYROX's unique structure alleviates the common worry of finishing last. The event is organised with staggered start times every 10 minutes throughout the day for various age groups and divisions. In essence, this means an athlete taking three hours could finish simultaneously as someone completing it in under an hour!
